South Africa, broken into the territories that actually travel together
Nine provinces plus the cross-province Kruger lowveld. Here is what each territory is known for, when to go, and where it sits relative to the rest — so you can plan a route that makes geographic sense instead of bouncing across the map.
The nine provinces
Western Cape
Oct–Apr (dry summer); whale season Jun–Nov
The gateway most first-timers fly into. Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route, and the whale coast in one Mediterranean-climate province. The most polished tourism infrastructure in the country — and the most crowded in peak summer.
Eastern Cape
Sep–Apr; Whale watching Jun–Nov
Undervisited and quietly the best value in the country. The Wild Coast, malaria-free Big Five reserves, Addo, and a coastline that rewards people willing to drive a little further than the Garden Route ends.
Northern Cape
Aug–Sep (flowers); Apr–Sep (desert parks)
The biggest, emptiest province — arid, vast, and unlike anywhere else here. Famous for the Namaqualand spring flower bloom, the Richtersveld, and Kgalagadi. Not a beach-and-wine destination; a desert one, and a superb one.
KwaZulu-Natal
Mar–Sep (Berg hiking); Jun–Jul (sardine run)
Subtropical coast, the highest Drakensberg peaks, iSimangaliso's wetlands, and deep Zulu heritage. The one province where you can surf in the morning and walk a mountain pass in the afternoon — if you plan the drive.
Mpumalanga
Jun–Sep (dry safari season)
The southern half of Kruger and the Panorama Route — the mist-belt escarpment, waterfalls, and God's Window. The classic first-safari province, with most of the Big Five infrastructure within a few hours of the gate.
Limpopo
Jun–Sep (dry safari season)
The quieter, hotter, wilder half of the Kruger lowveld, plus Mapungubwe's ancient ruins and baobab-studded country. Fewer first-timers, more space, and the kind of safari that feels less like a theme park.
North West
May–Sep (dry season)
Malaria-free safari within reach of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Pilanesberg and Madikwe give you Big Five game viewing without the long drive to Kruger or the malaria considerations of the lowveld.
Free State
Sep–Apr
Golden farmland you'll cross rather than target. Golden Gate Highlands National Park is the headline — sandstone cliffs and grassland — and a calm transect for road trips cutting between the coast and the interior.
Gauteng
Year-round (high altitude, dry winters)
The arrival hub for almost every international trip — Johannesburg and Pretoria. Not a destination to linger in for most travellers, but the gateway to the north and the place where your trip actually starts.
Kruger & the Lowveld
How to use this
Most first trips combine two territories — the Western Cape plus a safari region, or KwaZulu-Natal's coast and Berg. Three provinces starts to feel rushed unless you have two weeks and are comfortable with long drives.
The Kruger lowveld is listed separately because it spans two provinces; everything else maps cleanly. Use the atlas to drill into each province once you've picked a direction.
