When to go — and when not to, for what you came for
There is no single national answer. South Africa spans deserts, subtropical coast, and snow-capped mountains, and the best month for whales is not the best month for Kruger. Here is the honest seasonal picture, by what you actually came to do.

Summer
Hot, coastal, and booked solid over the festive stretch.
The Western Cape is dry and golden — peak Cape Town, peak wine country, and the busiest six weeks of the year from mid-December when South Africans themselves take the coast. The lowveld and the KZN coast turn humid and green; thundershowers make the bush thick and game harder to find. If you want the festive season on the beach, book a year ahead.

Autumn
The quiet shoulder most experienced travellers quietly prefer.
Mild days, long golden light, thinning crowds, and the best value of the year. The Kruger rains taper and the bush stays green but starts opening up. The whales have left the Cape, the sardine run hasn't started, and almost nothing is at peak demand — which is exactly why people who hate crowds plan their whole trip here.

Winter
Safari season. The Cape is wet. The Berg can snow.
This is prime Kruger: dry, cool, vegetation low, and animals forced to the waterholes and rivers. Days are warm in the lowveld and cold at dawn on the game drive. The Western Cape flips to green and wet — moody, quiet, and good value if you don't mind rain. The southern right whales start arriving in Hermanus, and the high Drakensberg can see snow.

Spring
Wildflowers, whale peaks, and everything warming at once.
Namaqualand and the West Coast flower from late July into mid-September — a two-to-three-week desert bloom that is the country's most time-sensitive spectacle. Whale numbers peak around Hermanus and De Hoop in September and October. The lowveld warms, the first rains green it up again, and the whole country feels like it's turning back on before the summer rush.

By what you came for
If you're here for one thing in particular, this is the window to build the trip around.
Mid-December to mid-January is peak domestic travel. Coastal accommodation fills and prices jump. International visitors who can shift their dates by two weeks either side save money and get the same weather.
South African school terms break in April, July, and September/October. Those weeks nudge local demand on the Garden Route, the Berg, and the Kruger gate lodges. Plan around them or lean into them.
March–May and September–November give you the best balance of weather, crowds, and price. If you can travel then, do. Most locals can't, which is why it works.
