Itinerary
The Perfect 14-Day First Trip
Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route, and a safari — the trip most first-timers should actually take.
Why this route works
It front-loads the Western Cape so you settle in, keeps hotel changes to four bases, and ends with safari so you go home on a high. Two weeks is enough to do this without rushing if you don't add a fourth region.
Day 1
Cape Town
Overnight: Cape Town
Minimal
Arrive, settle, walk the city
Land at CPT. Don't try to do anything ambitious. Walk the City Bowl, eat somewhere good, sleep off the flight.
Day 2
Cape Town
Overnight: Cape Town
Minimal
Table Mountain and the V&A
Book Table Mountain for the first clear morning — it closes for weather. Afternoon at the V&A Waterfront or Kirstenbosch.
Day 3
Cape Town
Overnight: Cape Town
~120 km round trip
Cape Peninsula
Drive south: Hout Bay, Chapman's Peak, Cape Point, Boulders Beach penguins. A full, excellent day.
Day 4
Cape Town
Overnight: Cape Town
~1 hour each way
Winelands day trip
Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. Pick two estates, not five. Have a long lunch.
Day 5
Hermanus
Overnight: Hermanus
~2 hours
Head east along the coast
Drive the Whale Coast. Stop in Hermanus. In season, the whales are the point.
Day 12
Kruger area
Overnight: Safari lodge or SANParks camp
Flight + short transfer
Safari begins
Fly to Nelspruit or Hoedspruit. Don't drive. First game drive in the late afternoon.
Day 13
Kruger area
Overnight: Safari lodge or SANParks camp
In-park
Full day on safari
Morning and evening game drives. The middle of the day is for resting and lunch.
Day 14
Flight
Fly home
Last morning drive if you can, then fly out of JNB or CPT.
