The short version
Stellenbosch is bigger, wine-led, and easier to fill a day with tastings. Franschhoek is smaller, food-led, prettier, and the tram makes it effortless. They're 25 minutes apart, so with a car you can do both — but if you're picking one, pick by what you care about.
Pick Stellenbosch if
- You care more about wine than food.
- You want a proper town with a university and a bit of life after dark.
- You're happy driving between estates.
Pick Franschhoek if
- Food is the reason you came.
- You want the prettiest single street in the Winelands.
- You'd rather take a tram than drive between tastings.
The third option: do both, badly
If you have one day and a car, morning tastings in Stellenbosch and a long lunch in Franschhoek is a genuinely good day. Just don't expect to "do" either properly — you're sampling both.
The option nobody mentions: Constantia
If you only have half a day and you're based in Cape Town, skip both and go to Constantia. It's inside the city, it's credible, and it saves you the drive.
