Why go
The largest and emptiest province — a third of South Africa's land with a fraction of its people. The Northern Cape is the country's frontier: the Kalahari, the Richtersveld, Namaqualand's flower desert, the Orange River, and the SKA's radio-quiet Karoo. Almost no one comes here by accident, and that is the point — it rewards travellers who plan for emptiness, stars, and silence. The honest take: it's not a province to 'see' in a sweep; it's a province of specific destinations (Kgalagadi, Richtersveld, Sutherland, Namaqualand in flower) separated by very long drives. Go for one thing, go prepared, and don't try to do two.

What to know
Distances are vast and fuel stations sparse — plan every leg. Summer is brutally hot in the interior; winter is cold but clear. Flower season (Aug–Sep) and winter star-gazing are the two windows most travellers time.
