Why go
The 'place of the rising sun' — the province that holds South Africa's biggest safari draw (Kruger), its most famous private reserves (Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Klaserie), the Panorama Route escarpment with the Blyde River Canyon, and the trout highveld of Dullstroom. Mpumalanga is, for most travellers, the safari province — but that undersells it. It also has the 3.5-billion-year-old Makhonjwa geology of Barberton, the gold-rush living museum of Pilgrim's Rest, the rock-climbing mecca of Waterval Boven, and the mist-belt wild horses of Kaapsehoop. The honest take: it's a province where most visitors do one thing (Kruger) and miss the rest, and the rest is worth slowing down for.
