Why go
The Karoo town almost every South African road-tripper knows — roughly halfway between Joburg and Cape Town on the N1, at the junction with the N9 to the Eastern Cape. Colesberg is the canonical overnight on the long drive, and it earns it: a tidy grid of Cape Karoo and Victorian churches, a working horse-farming economy, and enough B&Bs and restaurants to do the one-night job well. It's not a destination you detour for, but it is the stop that makes the 1,400km drive survivable, and the light over the Karoo koppies at dusk is the real reward.

What to know
Book ahead in school holidays — it's the default N1 stop. The Colesberg-Kempton Museum and a Karoo sunset drive are the extras. Fill fuel — it's a long stretch either way.
