Why go
The capital of the Hantam Karoo, under the Hantam Mountains, and the gateway to Nieuwoudtville's flowers. Calvinia is a proper Karoo farming town with a surprise — the largest concentration of Cape Dutch gabled houses outside the Winelands, a museum in the old synagogue, and a giant sheep-shaped water tower. It's the sensible base for the northern flower route and the Akkerendam Nature Reserve, and a more honest Karoo overnight than the highway alternatives.
