Why it's worth your time
South Africa's premier coral reef dive destination, inside the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (UNESCO) on the northern KZN coast. Sodwana Bay's warm Indian Ocean reefs — Stringer, Two-Mile, Seven-Mile — hold 95 coral species, 1200 fish species, and the country's only true tropical reef ecosystem. For divers it's the coral-and-warm-water opposite of the Cape's cold kelp dives, and the country's dive destination for tropical-reef divers; for the iSimangaliso traveller it pairs with the Wetland Park's other half — whales, turtles, and the coastal lakes.

Year-round diving; best Mar–Sep for visibility. Warm water (24°C+). The reefs are graded by distance (2-Mile, 5-Mile, 7-Mile, 9-Mile) — the further, the more pristine. Inside iSimangaliso — park fees apply. Book operators at the bay.
