Why it's worth your time
Greater Kruger isn't a park you enter; it's the planning term for Kruger National Park plus the cluster of private reserves — Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Klaserie, Thornybush — that sit on its unfenced western boundary and share the same ecosystem. That matters because it's the core decision in planning a lowveld trip: self-drive the national park at SANParks prices, stay in a private reserve for guided drives and off-road access, or split the two. A common and good pattern is two or three nights self-driving Kruger followed by two or three nights in a private reserve, giving you both the budget freedom of the park and the guided intensity of a lodge. It's all malaria zone, and the whole region is best in the dry winter months.
