Why it's worth your time
A remote left-hand point break on the West Coast, 2.5 hours north of Cape Town — cold Atlantic water, a peeling left over a reef-and-sand bottom, and a genuine sense of pilgrimage. Elands Bay is the Cape surfer's winter run: when the Atlantic swell lines up, the left runs long and clean, and the town is a single hotel, a campsite, and a café. For non-surfers there's little — a wild beach, rock art, and a West Coast quiet — but for surfers it's the cold-water opposite of J-Bay, and one of the country's true surf destinations.
What we love
The cold, powerful left; the remote West Coast setting; the single-hotel, single-café, single-surf-shop town; the sense of pilgrimage.
What to know
Winter (May–Sept) for the swell. Cold water — a 4/3 wetsuit minimum. Minimal facilities: the hotel, the campsite, the café. Bring everything. The road in is gravel for the last stretch.
