Why it's worth your time

Durban's Indian community created it in the 1940s — a portable lunch for workers who couldn't take time off, served in a hollowed bread loaf that doubles as the bowl. The name most likely comes from the 'Bania' caste of the original shopkeepers, though a man nicknamed 'Bunny' also gets the credit. Eat it at House of Curries or Britannia on Durban's Florida Road, order mutton or bean, and eat it with your fingers — a fork and knife mark you out as a tourist.
