Why it's worth your time
A fossilised sandstone shoal 4km off the Umkomaas river mouth, and one of the world's great dive sites — ranked in the global top ten for its shark diving. Aliwal Shoal's distinction is the ragged-tooth sharks that aggregate on the reef in winter (June–Oct), plus tiger sharks, hammerheads, and the wreck of the Produce. For divers it's a genuine anchor — the one South African dive site with a world ranking; for the KZN coast it's the dive destination that justifies the stop. The honest note: visibility is variable, and it's an advanced dive in current — but the shark density is world-class.
